David attended Wayzata high school and later joined Ringling College of Art and Design in Sarasota, Florida. After graduating he worked as a Disney illustrator. He started his own company, Bromstad Studio, which designed fantasy bedrooms for children after he was laid off from his job on Disney.

In 2006 David moved to Miami and competed for HGTV’s Design Star, a reality competition show to pick a host for a new show on HGTV cable network. He won the grand prize which included a car and a chance to host his own show on HGTV. In the following season, he became a judge on the show.
