Troy Roberts Biography

He was awarded his first Emmy for coverage of the 1996 Olympic Summer Games in Atlanta and the bombing that occurred during the event. He also earned an Alfred I. DuPont-Columbia Award and two Emmy awards.

Roberts distinguished himself in 2013 with his Emmy winning report on the manhunt and capture of the Boston Marathon bombing suspects. He was also part of the team coverage of the Newtown, Conn., elementary school shooting which earned CBS News a 2014 DuPont-Columbia award.

Roberts worked as a host and producer of a weekly newsmagazine show at KPIX-TV, a San Francisco-based, CBS-owned television company. He was also a reporter for Portland-based KATU-TV from 1987 to 1990.

He moved to WCBS-TV in 1990 reporting for Channel 2’s This Morning and also anchoring local news segments for CBS Morning News. Roberts later joined CBS News in 1993 to co-anchor the overnight broadcast of Up to the Minute. There, he interviewed various newsmakers and personalities. He also co-anchored CBS Morning News from 1995 through 1996.

Troy attended the University of California, Berkeley where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Political Science in 1984.

In his journalism career, Troy has examined stories involving the rise in hate crimes, international adoption scams, an investigation into several destructive cults and the events of 9/11. As a correspondent, he has done reporting on the destructive aftermaths of hurricanes, earthquakes, and tornadoes to lighter fare like the Royal Wedding and dog sledding in Alaska with model Lauren Hutton.

Troy has served as a reporter and anchor for WCBS-TV, the CBS-owned station in New York (1990-93). He was a reporter for KATU-TV Portland, and also for Ore (1987-90). He served as anchor and producer of a weekly news magazine at KPIX-TV, the CBS owned station in San Francisco from 1985 to 1987.

He created and co-executive produced the OWN network documentary, “Sag Harbor” in 2015. This program took an unprecedented look inside one of America’s most exclusive and historically significant African-American beach community in New York’s The Hamptons.
