He attended Syracuse University’s Newhouse School of Public Communications graduating in 2009 with a bachelor’s degree in Broadcast Journalism. He also won the Syracuse Press Club Award for “Best Radio Sports Feature,” in 2009.

Gelbs began his broadcasting career at MSG Varsity in New York where he spent four years. He then moved to MSG, serving as the host of MSG 150 during New York Knicks and New York Rangers telecasts. He has also hosted the network’s College Basketball coverage.

Gelbs was born to Scott H. and Robin A. Gelbs. Gelbs and his two younger brothers, Jared and Adam were raised in Reform Judaism. His father served as a physical therapist for the New York Rangers NHL team in the 1990s when he was growing up.

He became a fan of the Rangers, attending Rangers games in part due to his father’s position with the team. He was also a fan of the New York Yankees in his youth.

His uncle operated a dry cleaning business; among his customers was Tom Seaver, who then provided the young Gelbs with an autograph, made out to “Little Steven.”

At the MSG Radio network, Gelbs handled the pre-game, post-game and intermission reports for Rangers Broadcasts – which aired on ESPN Radio in New York. In his tenure at MSG Varsity, he was utilized in a number of different capacities. He serves as anchor, host, feature & sideline reporter, play-by-play announcer and color commentator.

While at MSG Varsity, he was nominated for 4 New York Emmys, including “Sports Anchor of the Year” in 2012.

He joined SportsNet New York in 2013. Gelb’s first assignment involved covering a Brooklyn Cyclones game for the network. He filled in for Kevin Burkhardt for 50 games for the 2014 season. This leads him to replace Burkhardt beginning in the 2015 New York Mets season as Burkhardt left for Fox Sports.
