Chris Cato Wiki
Chris Cato is an American journalist currently working as an anchor for FOX 13 11 p.m. news with the amazing Cynthia Smoot.
Chris Cato Biography
He graduated from Troy University “Go Trojans!” He has not revealed his parents’ and siblings’ names in public.
His career actually started in Florida, at WMBB in Panama City! he will never forget anchoring 12 straight hours of coverage during Hurricane Ivan in 2004, “The Year of the Hurricane” in Florida.
Chris left WMBB in 2005 to work at WSPA in Greenville-Spartanburg, South Carolina. He covered a lot of major stories during his time there, everything from a serial killer to an affair in the governor’s office, but my most fulfilling moment came through some of the investigative work.
They uncovered proof of groundwater pollution beneath a community that has a long history of cancer; our work forced a large corporation to expand its cleanup of the groundwater and resulted in a class-action lawsuit by affected property owners. Cato was honored with a regional Edward R. Murrow and several other awards for that series of stories. 2012 brought him to WCAU in Philadelphia. Chris Cato anchored the weekday morning news and won an Emmy as part of that team.
During his three years in Philly, Chris reported live from the scenes of several memorable national stories including Hurricane Sandy’s destruction, the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre in Connecticut, and Pope Francis’s historic U.S. visit. He also traveled to the Vatican and Rome to file stories ahead of the pope’s visit.
Cato loved Philadelphia, but when the opportunity came along to work at FOX 13 and return to that famous Florida sunshine — and be closer to the family — he knew he had to pounce on it! He is proud to work at such a dynamic TV station that has a legacy of delivering the best coverage to the Tampa Bay market.
Cato is joining Fox-owned WTVT Tampa, Fla. (DMA 11) as anchor and reporter. In the beginning of early December, Cato will anchor WTVT’s weekday 11 p.m. newscast alongside Cynthia Smoot and report weekdays for various evening newscasts. Most recently, Cato was an anchor and reporter for WCAU Philadelphia. Previously, he held positions as an anchor and reporter for WSPA Greenville-Spartanburg, S.C., as well as an anchor and reporter for WMBB Panama City, Fla.
“You know you’re making a good move when the legendary Florida sunshine is only a small part of the appeal,” said Cato. “To work for the news leader in the largest market in the state, alongside some of the best journalists in the industry and under the guidance of a dynamic news director, I consider this a once-in-a-career opportunity. My family and I look forward to calling the Tampa Bay area our home.”
